History: A link to Reynir's wiki but since the history section there is extremely lacking, I'll summarize briefly. Reynir grew up in Iceland, the one safe nation left after an apocalyptic disease filled the world with all manner of monsters. Reynir's older four siblings (born through a genetic program called 'dagrenning') are immune to the disease, and thus have many more opportunities for jobs and travel than he does. He grew up non-immune and sheltered by parents who wanted him to stay at home on their sheep farm and told him it was still illegal for non-immune people to travel. Once he found out this wasn't true, Reynir ran away, to Reykjavík and then aboard the first ship that would hire him.
Reynir snuck off this ship in a crate and ended up joining an expedition into the Silent World. Once there, Reynir discovered that he was a mage, capable of interacting with other mages in his dreams, of using runes to create a variety of magical effects (mostly protective). He meets his
fylgja (a spirit guide in the form of a sheepdog) and discovers he can see omens and spirits that non-mages cannot. When the expedition runs afoul of some very dangerous ghosts, Reynir alerts his teammates of the danger and helps to defend them. He makes contact with the ghost of a priest and eventually leads the spirits to the old abandoned church where she can lead them to the afterlife. During this expedition, they are attacked many times, by those ghosts and by various trolls and beasts, and Reynir survives several desperate battles. The only other non-immune member of the team is infected and commits suicide before she can turn into a troll; Reynir struggles with depression during the mission and grief after his friend dies.
Once the expedition returns to Iceland, Reynir is reunited with his family, and introduces his fellow travelers to the small village where he grew up. He briefly attends the academy in Reykjavík where mages are taught, but after a short summer course on 'farm magic' he is told that he cannot take more advanced classes, since he is not immune and would never be hired into a military setting where he could use the skills he would learn them. Irritated but undeterred, Reynir departs with his teammates for Finland to track down Onni (a Finnish mage who has run off on a mysterious mission). Reynir's canon point is plucking him out in the middle of this journey, just after he and two of his companions have shared an unusual dream where they delved into the memories of another mage.
Personality: CHEERFULReynir's defining personality trait, to those who have just met him, is his happy nature and positive outlook. He is an exceptionally cheerful young man, which can be uplifting to some or perky to the point of annoyance to others, based on their preferences. He has a naturally joyful disposition and is demonstrative about it, both in affection to others and in his attitude towards the world itself. Reynir is honest about his feelings, and very often those feelings are glee, or hope, or optimism.
STUBBORNThis does not, however, mean that he is nothing but sunshine: Reynir can be extremely hard-headed when he gets an idea in his head. He accommodates and helps others whenever he can, up until a point. If he is sure that he is right about something, Reynir will not be deterred - by danger, by threats, or by insults. He refuses to let anyone - professors or his parents or his peers - tell him he should just accept his life as a small-time rural mage. He is adamant about his opinions and can stare down those who might seem on the surface to be far more menacing than himself. When Reynir's gut is telling him something is right, he's not likely to be talked out of it. And, particularly when he is disrespected or underestimated by others, Reynir will stand up for himself, confidently.
FRIENDLYAnd yet, Reynir is an open and friendly person, happy to count even the prickliest people as his friends and companions. Though his teammates sometimes treat him quite badly - saying rude things to or about him, biting him, locking him out of the room while he's trying to talk to them etc., Reynir is quick to forgive and quick to forget. He has sympathy for others and their situations. He even goes so far as to befriend a woman who has been transformed into a troll - something completely unheard of from any of the other characters in the series. Reynir doesn't shy away from difficult people, but seems happy to talk with them about how they see the world, and hopeful that he can help them with whatever is wrong so that maybe they will see things a little more brightly, like he does.
SHELTEREDReynir is capable of being this friendly, helpful, optimistic person in part because he grew up in a safe and loving home, compared to many other characters in his series (or other canons for that matter). While his homelife is somewhat complicated by his parents's over-protectiveness, and his siblings' immunity, ultimately, Reynir grew up safe, cared for, and loved. He also grew up in almost complete ignorance of how bad things were in the rest of the world. He knows very little about other countries, about history, about the environment outside Iceland... honestly there is a LOT that he was never educated about. This leads to blind spots in his knowledge and to reckless behavior. Reynir doesn't always know or believe in the perilous consequences to his actions. He rushes in and doesn't think about how he might be running right into danger. He was even ignorant about himself and his mage powers.
AMBITIOUSOnce he discovered this other side to himself, however, Reynir showed a streak of ambition that is an interesting counterpoint to his softer side. Reynir wants to do good in the world - not only to help others (though that is important to him) and not only to have an adventure, but to
prove himself. Because he was the youngest child and the only one not immune, Reynir has been underestimated and babied for much of his life. He is denied opportunities merely because he isn't immune, but at this canon point, he is tired of being told he should just accept a simple rural life. Reynir wants to do more, and be more.
INTUITIVEThough he is far less trained and educated than the other mages in the series, Reynir accomplishes great things, in part because he is willing to let his emotions and instincts guide him. Reynir isn't a deep thinker; he trusts his heart and his gut and for the most part, doing so hasn't led him too far astray. He seems to grasp magic on an intuitive level, to recognize what is a threat and what is an opportunity. Reynir is very open about his emotions and very vulnerable - something that is fairly unheard of in such a harsh postapocalyptic world, and one in which various monsters and malicious spirits will try to get a hold on unsuspecting mages that don't guard their hearts. Yet Reynir's openness hasn't led him wrong... yet.
Abilities & Skills: DREAMSLike all mages, rather than dreaming as normal humans would, Reynir instead appears in a shared dreamspace. However, while Finnish mages such as Lalli and Onni tend to remain in their own areas, putting up barriers to defend themselves, Reynir seems capable of easily breezing past these barriers. He shows particular skill at navigating the dreamspace, sensing where others are and discovering places and clues that will be helpful. He is able to walk on water in dreams and is often accompanied by his
fylgja. On some occasions, Reynir's dreams will take the form of a more direct omen warning him of danger - sometimes literally when his
fylgja speaks to him.
RUNESAs an
Icelandic mage, Reynir has been chosen by his gods to have powers, which he uses primarily by drawing runes that protect and shield, ward off enemies, or alert him to danger. Reynir was using runes before he had any instruction about them, working off vague recollections of runes he'd seen, some trial and error, and some intuition. By his second expedition, Reynir has received some training; he carries equipment with him he can use to paint runes on a large scale, and is more confident in his skills.
SEEINGReynir can see spirits and ghosts that are invisible to non-mages, as well as sensing presences of a spiritual nature. He sees omens of the future - some direct, others abstract - both while awake and while asleep (but not very frequently). He can hear the tormented, unceasing internal screams and pleas of those who have been infected and transformed into trolls.
Magic is fun!CONNECTIONIn times of danger and desperate need, Reynir is capable of contacting other mages, even across great distances, and even while he is awake. He pleads for help and is heard by Onni all the way in Sweden; later, he sends his
fylgja to inform Onni the expedition has been surrounded. Reynir also prays to his gods, though the extent to which they directly hear or heed him is unclear.
FARM WISDOM!Reynir grew up on a sheep farm and has a variety of farm boy skills, including but perhaps not limited to: caring for sheep, shearing sheep and processing wool, basic gardening, basic cooking, basic mending (fences, clothes, etc.), basic animal first aid, milking and basic cheese-making, probably some activities involving hay?
Inventory/Companions: Reynir has no companions and would have on his person a backpack filled with your basic post-apocalyptic adventuring gear. The only item of note would be a
respirator mask that non-immune people use when out in the Silent World, as well as a long paintbrush used to draw large runes (and a pot of black paint for said runes).
Choice: Witch
Reason: Reynir is already a mage in his own canon, so there are many similarities. He is still new to being a mage, however, and learning about his powers and potential. Especially considering his frustrations with being refused a magical education in his own world, the idea of him learning, developing his powers, and getting to use them for good, is really compelling and appealing to me.
